Scary. On multiple levels.

This was sad to see. I am, as well, not a legal expert, but re: your post on the facebook group--speech can be restricted in a public school (most recently this happened in that Bong hits for Jesus case I told you about, and most notably at Hazelwood East, the case was I believe (Hazlewood School District v. Kuhlmeier--I spelt that wrong). Now these were both high schools where this happened opposed to Univ of Florida, so the standard may be different. As I said I don't know.

We've talked about this over many glasses of Kool-Aid too, that it's good to see students became impassioned about something, I still think it is sad that it took a white kid getting tasered at a John Kerry speech to get the youth this riled up. Somewhere Emmet Till is wishing his legacy was more than just a kick ass line in a Kayne West song....

ahh you're right, i forgot about the hazelwood case from high school gov't. and about the bong hits for jesus, i remember you telling me about that.

yeah, it's funny we discuss kids not "drinking the koolaid" over drinks of koolaid. yeah, it's sad it takes things like this (as in the v state thing) to get kids riled up, but look on the bright side. information travels faster now than ever, so, presumably kids can make informed decisions, whether right or wrong.

No, you're right about information moving faster...and like I said at least people care. If this happened and people just shrugged, then well, then we have problems.

In a similar vein, one of my friends emailed me about a new game he's invented "Is this a headline from the front page of The Onion or Cnn.com" surprisingly it's a much more difficult game then you would think...

I don't want to pile on him at this trying time, but I think a lot of this has to do with OJ--I was too young to remember so my point of reference may be clouded by nostalagia and what not, but his trial seemingly made it ok for news stations to focus on an entertainment slant, where they start worrying about ratings and web traffic. I guess tv news (print news too?) is a business, but the fact that it's a business means...what? Is that a path I want to go down, or will it be like the looking behind the curtain--and finding out the Wizard is frail and despicable?

In the end, I think we can all agree that as long as Juan Gonzalez's steroid use is well documented, things will finally start to turn the corner...

Re: Kayne West, I think he did a number on 50 last week, by like a hundred thousand...

i forgot to look at the sales, i'm surprised by that, gangster rap must be on its way out. i think the sensationalism of the news is an example of the concept that (i'm paraphrasing) "if people want to buy, there will be 10 more to sell." news stations figured out, with incidents like oj, that shock sold much better than restrained professionalism.

i'd also venture to say that a contributing factor to cnn, et all focusing on "the hoochie who got kicked off the plane" is the site's metrics. the news agencies can more accurately figure out what people look at, at work.

food for thought: i've looked at the metrics for this site. by far, and i mean BY FAR, my weak post on to catch a predator brought in the most traffic. you should see some of the search terms too. things like "to catch predator legal options" uhhh haha

apparently theyre charging him with resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. Well, that was after the fact;they took him away for nothing...you can't drag someone away for speaking against something in a public forum...I dont know...but apparently the guy has a website where he tapes himself performing practical jokes. I like how the camera moves to the side so when they "taser" him it's obscured by the chairs
